WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TRAUMA CENTERS IN NEVADA
POSTED BY ORONOZ & ERICSSON || 19-JAN-2015
Nevada is home to four officially designated trauma centers, all of which are equipped to help you in the event of a traumatic injury or accident. A trauma center will have trauma surgeons, nurses, and sophisticated medical equipment available around the clock for certain serious types of emergencies.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN EMERGENCY ROOM AND A TRAUMA CENTER?
An emergency room or urgent care center is a place where people know they can go to receive medical attention quickly. The injuries and illnesses seen by an emergency room staff may or may not be immediately serious or life-threatening. A trauma center deals with emergencies that are outside the scope of what an ER is equipped for. It is required to have certain staff and equipment on-hand at all times that are prepared to save lives at a moment’s notice. The cases seen by a trauma center are immediately and seriously life-threatening, and they can range from accident injuries to violent crime injuries.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF TRAUMA CENTERS?
Trauma Centers are given different levels based on their available resources. A Level I trauma center is the most elite ranking, which means the hospital has a certain number of trauma staff and equipment available 24/7. A Level I trauma center is required to meet certain annual requirements in order to maintain its status. Level III is generally the lowest level, which means that it may not have the full availability of specialists, but it does have certain resources on hand that are outside the scope of an ER. A Level II trauma center falls in between.
There are also Pediatric Trauma Centers, which specialize in child injuries and have certain pediatric specialists and equipment on hand.
